My writing reflects my fascination with magic and old beliefs. I am curious about what makes us abjected and ‘other’, and in how close we really are to the imaginations of our forebears.
I write in a shepherd’s hut tucked into the corner of a field in Kent. The hut itself is constructed from salvaged materials that bring their own history, and is full of talismans collected by me, and books on folk lore and magic. When I’m not actually writing, I spend a lot of time thinking about writing, reading, and watching the local crow gangs squaring up to the magpies and buzzards. My writing day is fuelled by caffeine and curiosity. I’m something of an Alice – I spend far too much time daydreaming, or chasing down rabbit holes after yet another arcane custom or belief - I always feel that I am hunting that elusive thread of ‘story’, and that I can’t quit until I’ve captured it. I write directly onto a MacBook. My handwriting is so appalling that quite honestly, if I wrote longhand it would never be read! That doesn’t stop me from indulging a small obsession with finding the perfect pencil, though…
